hormones, androgenetic alopecia disrupts the healthy growth cycle of your follicles, and can
lead to significant hair loss on the head. A hereditary condition, androgenetic alopecia is far and
away the most common cause of male baldness.
Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata, meanwhile, is an autoimmune condition—one in which the body actually
attacks the follicles, usually leading to either a single bald patch or a series of bald patches.
Alopecia Totalis
True to its name, alopecia totalis leads to total hair loss—meaning, complete baldness across
the scalp. This condition can impact men and women alike, though it is fairly uncommon.
Alopecia Universalis
An even more advanced form of alopecia—and also a very rare condition—alopecia universalis
causes all hair on the body to fall out, including eyelashes and eyebrows.
Alopecia Barbae
This form of alopecia leads to hair loss only in the beard area; it can sometimes be a single bald
patch on the beard, or it can be total loss of the beard.
Traction Alopecia. Traction alopecia is brought about by excessive pulling or tugging of the hair and is associated
with certain women’s hair styles. Even a tight braid can sometimes cause traction alopecia. As
the hair is pulled, it actually causes scarring to the follicles, which can lead to permanent hair
loss.
